Fair play in cricket:
a U.S. guide.

For U.S. players, coaches, parents, caregivers, and officials: how global cricket principles connect with USA Cricket’s published conduct and minor-athlete safeguards.

Reader promise

Start globally. Apply the correct U.S. document locally.

Fair play in U.S. cricket combines the applicable Laws and playing conditions with participant conduct, safety, inclusion, and respect. The global Spirit of Cricket guide explains MCC Law 41 and Law 42; this edition focuses on U.S.-specific people and welfare responsibilities.

USA Cricket’s 2025 Code of Conduct applies to the affiliated people and activities defined in that policy. A local league or event may also have its own current rules. Confirm the organizer, event, and policy version before relying on a procedure.

Independent guide: FC Fargo is not USA Cricket, a local league, a reporting channel, or a disciplinary body. For an actual concern, use the responsible organizer’s current official process.

Participant responsibilities

Four roles shape the U.S. cricket environment.

These short summaries point to the source; they do not replace the complete code.

Players

Play by the rules, control temper, avoid abuse and deliberate distraction, respect decisions, and treat every participant with dignity.

Youth cricket

Fair play includes a safe environment off the pitch.

USA Cricket’s Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policy, effective 22 March 2025 and listed by USA Cricket as effective May 2025, sets standards for adults interacting with players under 18 in covered programmes.

Observable interactions

Covered one-to-one contact is generally expected to be observable and interruptible unless a stated exception applies.

Professional communications

Electronic communications with minor athletes have copying, platform, and professional-content controls.

Changing and travel

Locker rooms, transport, lodging, and athletic-treatment settings carry specific consent and supervision requirements.

Training and reporting

Covered adults may need training; the policy identifies official reporting obligations and channels for covered violations.

This is a high-level educational signpost, not a safeguarding determination or emergency service. Read the full current policy and use the proper official or emergency route for the situation.

U.S. decision aid

Which layer should you check first?

1. Match decision

Identify the competition, current Laws or playing conditions, and the authorized umpire or review process.

2. Participant conduct

Ask whether the person and activity fall within USA Cricket’s Code, an event code, or a local league policy.

3. Welfare or integrity

If safety, a minor, discrimination, retaliation, or integrity is involved, use the current specialist policy and official channel.
